La Liga - Round 1: FC Barcelona vs Levante U.D.
On Monday, October 7th 2013, I embarked on a new chapter in my life; at Markham Stouffville Hospital, with a great fan base. I have just signed a new contract, which will last until 2014, to work in the cardio respiratory department of this newly refurbished hospital. Similar to how anxious many soccer players are, Neymar Junior of Brazil felt nervous upon arriving at FC Barcelona. He was worried about how he would fit in with this highly skilled team which had won many trophies, awards, and was constantly recognized as one of the greatest teams. Comparably, I was tensed as I entered the doors of this state-of-the-art hospital, as I was worried as to would I be able to work well with such a highly reputed staff in one of the most important departments in the hospital. However, after great pondering and a week at this new placement I have come to many realizations that maybe this is the perfect place for me; maybe in true sense this is where I belong. That is something that I will expand more in to as I explain my first week at this new, but memorable week at Markham Stouffville Hospital.
If I were to use one word to describe how this week has been for me, I would be tempted to use the word Intriguing, as it brought out my inner interest in the Medical field. I enjoyed working with patients, similar to how Neymar enjoys working with his team-mates, be it his well-known Brazilian ones or his newly found Spanish friends. But the real question I asked myself is, Why was this week so intriguing and enjoyable? Well, I believe that this week was so enjoyable, since it gave me a taste of how a real-life medical environment would be and how I would fit into it. Sure, it may be a bit too early to call a hospital setting my permanent future career, but it surely is a great work environment. When Neymar was asked how he feels about his recent move to FC Barcelona after a week, he simply replied by saying “I love how my life is going in Barcelona!” Just like Neymar, I love working; in this hospital, it is great interacting with patients and with co-workers who have all passed Medical school. I am always learning something new every day.
Why do I keep comparing my move with that of a star soccer player, who seems to have no connection with me at all? Well that is simple, both of us have entered a new environment and we both have positive attitudes; no matter how tough the situations have got. When I found out I have been accepted in the cardio respiratory department of the hospital, I instantly thought that I would be assisting a high-level doctor in a very important surgery; much to my dismay that was not going to happen. I was brought down to the ground, when my co-worker Varoon told me that I would be washing heart and blood pressure monitor wires’. In the back of my mind I was simply shocked, as I thought I deserved something better. After working in the hospital for a full week I had quickly come to an interesting realization, everybody starts small and the more effort you put in the more success you will receive. This is an ideal that I have started to implement in my style of work, not that I haven’t done this before; but I have started to use it more now. Neymar has been faced with a similar situation when he moved to FC Barcelona, as he thought he was the best and he should start every game; however he soon realized that he needs to learn to play the Barça way. Neymar’s determination has shown me how to remain optimistic and avoid overconfidence.
Furthermore, this week has been very informative and knowledgeable for me as I have learned a lot of the responsibilities that I will be expected to perform during this year. These responsibilities include; cleaning BP and heart monitors, doing administrative work, bringing in patients and stocking up on necessary equipment. Just like I have done this week, Neymar learned a lot about his responsibilities playing as a Left-winger in this new team during his first week at FC Barcelona. These new responsibilities include playing assists, giving through balls and lobs to the striker, Messi. It may seem like a lot of work by simply looking at the list of duties/responsibilities for me, but for somebody with a strong work ethic like me, these are very simple and easy tasks. When Neymar was asked a similar question, as to how he feels having a lot of adjusting and new responsibilities playing as a winger rather than the main striker. He simply replied by saying, “Responsibilities cannot hinder me, as this is the realization of a dream and the source for inexplicable pride.” This shows that Neymar and I are very similar in our outlooks in new situations.
All in all, this new move to the hospital in the Cardio-respiratory department has been very interesting and intriguing as I am more knowledgeable and have applied my vast, new knowledge when working in this hospital setting. Moreover, I can be compared to Brazilian soccer superstar Neymar Junior, as we both have a positive outlook on new opportunities and changes, as well as a die-hard attitude. Furthermore, when I am faced with many tasks to do in the hospital, I will do it no matter how long it may seemingly take or how hard they may seem; this shows that I have the right work ethic. Once again, Neymar thinks in a very similar manner as he said in his first interview, “Responsibilities cannot hinder me, as this is the realization of a dream and the source for inexplicable pride!” Therefore, it is evident that I enjoyed this first week and I look forward for the next week and the many adventures to come; just like Neymar does. From Camp Nou, this is adios to you and I will speak to you next time about the many more experiences I will have and the responsibilities that go with it, along with how Neymar's performance is against Malaga!
