La Liga - Round 2: FC Barcelona vs Malaga CF
Here I am, at the end of the third week of my placement in the Cardio-Respiratory department of the renowned Markham Stouffville Hospital. These past few weeks have not only been informative, but have given me a broader understanding of how working in a hospital would be like; honestly, I have no complains. I have been able to learn more about how the Holters work and what their job is. Furthermore, I learned about how the BP and HR of a patient relate to the amount of stress they are taking on their heart and lungs. But there were many times where I made a mistake and I took the responsibility to correct my mistake and own up for it as well. Some of these mistakes came about while cleaning Holters wires and others while doing simple preparation for patients. But I will talk more about how I took responsibilities for my actions, as well as many of my experiences a bit later in this journal. What a brilliant game it was yesterday, Round 2 of Liga BBVA: Barcelona vs. Malaga! Although nobody thinks of Neymar as a fouler, one cannot ignore the 3 yellow cards he received in his first 3 games. Maybe that is the response he is giving to his opposition for being fouled earlier in the season. Neymar answered that question with ease and explained about his inability to preform so well when he is being continuously fouled. But that is sometime that I will go into more depth as I talk about his responsibility and compare it with my responsibility taken.
Working at the hospital has been a great experience so far and I am really enjoying it. It has been a great learning experience for me as I have learned a lot about the different types of work the Cardio technicians do as well as the work that the Cardiologists do. But more than observing, it is what I have done in these past few weeks which have got me to really enjoy this placement. Although is started off with smaller and rather boring jobs, such as cleaning Holters wires, doing administrative work and stocking the equipment for the variety of tests. However, after working very hard for the first two weeks, my supervisor was impressed with my work habits, similar to how my teachers at school are, and decided to allow me to start observing different tests. This brought up a flame of excitement within me, as I thought to myself, “I am actually going to be able to observe these cardio tests!!!” In the next two days at my placement, I observed Holters tests and Stress tests and I started to worry less and less about all those petty tasks and I started to put in less effort. Then one day in the morning, I was about 20 minutes into doing my work, and one of my supervisor’s was unhappy with me; I had not cleaned the Holters properly. She then re-taught me how to clean the holters again and many times re-emphasized the importance of such cleanliness in a hospital environment. I was very unimpressed with myself, how could I have forgotten this little work; although it may seem boring, it is important. I apologized to my supervisor and told her that this is my entire fault, and as a result of that I will re-clean all of the holters wires. There were 25 holters wires, which took me about an hour to re-clean all of them. However, through this work I learned an important lesson which was to always aim for perfection in all work; no matter how small or big. The next day, when I cleaned the wires my supervisor looked at them and was very happy and said that I did a great job; now I was proud of my work, and believed I took responsibility for my actions in a true sense.
Just before the Barcelona vs. Malaga clash, Neymar talked to the press about how being the most fouled player in La Liga was a big thing for him. He believed that this showed how others think of him as a great player and a goal-scoring threat. Everybody viewed Neymar as hero, until the match finished. Neymar preformed 5 fouls and earning a yellow card for a hefty challenge on the opposition. Although Neymar provided an assist to Messi, that is no excuse for his harsh behavior towards the opposition. Neymar responded to the questions raised about his behavior, by saying, “I apologize for the way I played, as all these times I have been fouled I have lost chance to score goals and make assists for my team, my main purpose as a winger.” By doing this Neymar has shown that he has understood that it was his mistake only and went on to say, “The players who are fouled the most are the better players.” Neymar has taken the first step in admitting his mistake, similar to how I have when I was quickly cleaning the holters wires. But now, Neymar will look forward to make amends for his mistake(s) in both training and Round 3 of Liga BBVA, next week against Valencia. The question is: will Neymar be able to perform well against Valencia using a rather calm and collected mindset?
I believe that both I and Neymar have many similarities including our approaches on new situations, which I have explained a lot about in my previous journal. Not only do we have a similar approach, but we both will work hastily when trying to do something, be it scoring goals and making assists for Neymar or being able to observe and aid the technicians in preforming the various cardio-related tests. Neymar did not realize that he was taking a wrong step to achieve his goal of scoring and making assists, had he not made the fouls he would still be respected my many fans around the world; not to say that he isn't respected right now. On the other hand, when I worked in the hospital, I did not think about doing the small, helpful jobs for the technicians and just wanted to look at the cardio tests. As a result of that, my supervisor was very unimpressed with the manner in which I worked, but I made amends for it by spending well over and hour cleaning all 25 holters wires meticulously to perfection. Hopefully, Neymar will show that he has made amends for his mistake against Valencia next week.
All in all, this has been a marvelous week filled with great experiences for me as a Co-op student, be it my mistakes through which I have learned useful life lessons, or the interesting knowledge I have learned about the cardiovascular system and the many cardio-related tests. The part of this job that really captured my interest is their understanding of their jobs so well and how they know where to put each electrode for each and every specific test. Hopefully I will learn this just as well as them, as I observe and assist them in a variety of tests. Maybe now I am able to understand why the heart rate is so important in determining heart malfunctions, as the cardiologist analyzes the results of the tests to identify whether or not the individual’s heart is working as it should be. Neymar has also learned a new lesson this week and that is, patience is the key. Although I do understand the reason for him to commit so many fouls on the opposition, A question I keep asking is, why doesn't Neymar respond to those fouls by preforming better and better each match. Maybe my whole mindset is wrong about Neymar, but I will definitely find out next week; where Neymar will be starting once again as a Left-winger. From Camp Nou, this is adios to you and I hope to see you next week where I will talk to you more in-depth about more tales from the Cardio-respiratory department, and give you a detailed description of how Neymar is playing; and if he has made amends for his horrendous play this game.
