La Liga - Round 15: Athletic Bilbao 1 - 0 FC Barcelona
It has been a devastating week at the Camp Nou today... 2 losses on a trot and Barcelona are in a spot of bother. Anyways, welcome back to Camp Nou; although it was a terrifying week for Barca both in La Liga and the UCL. On the contrary, It has been a very interesting week for me at the hospital. I wouldn't have expected much to happen this week, as I was only there for 1 day. Apart from the regular administrative work, preparation for cardio tests, and equipment stocking; there were a few different things that have occurred. There was an elderly man who experienced intense spurts of chest pain, and a stress test was recommended for him. However, he simply refused to do it since he had a grudge against hospitals and their testing methods; listening to what he had to say; I was baffled. I have never witnessed any patient like that before, and decided to convince him that hospital know what they are doing; as medical professionals deal with them. He then talked to me about a situation where a hospital (not MSH) had accidentally caused the death of a close family-member. He further told me that he only came to the hospital to let the technician and doctor(s) know that he wouldn't be taking any test. How did I take a stand in a situation like that? I'll talk more about that as well as my Teacher's visit to the hospital to see how I was doing went. Moving on from MSH, Neymar had not played to the best of his ability missing a total of 6 1-on-1 scoring chances against the goalkeeper. How did Neymar miss those easy chances you ask? Well, it is definitely not cause of his incapability as a winger. Instead it occurred due to an incident that occurred in his family, as the death of one of his close friend's parents had taken a toll on both himself and his friend. If you haven't guessed it by now, I will be discussing the topic of Empathy and how it relates to Neymar and myself; as well as it's effects on the lives of individuals.
Let me start off explaining more about my definition of Empathy and how I show it at home, school, and work. Well I believe Empathy is being able to understand another individual's feelings and being able to relate to that on an emotional level. As I have already explained you about the situation that occurred at my workplace, where I was confronted with an elderly patient who would not take any cardio tests due to some personal experience with the hospital by which one of his relatives has died due to an accident by the hospital. Normally I would just explain my point-of-view on the situation to them and try to make them understand the severity of the case. However, this time I felt like I could really understand what the person was going through as I have faced a similar situation with my grandfather. So, I had an interesting talk with him and I really did show some empathy towards him as I have some personal experience, as I also was in the same situation as he currently is in. Through this discussion with him, I was able to explain him the advantages of taking this test and considering MSH's great success rate and error-free accuracy as well as the disastrous disadvantages of not taking this test; possibly the necessity of a risky surgery or possibly; death. He finally understood what I was explaining him and agreed to do the test, but I was still flabbergasted at myself. I was asking myself, Did I just say that? What Made me Speak Like That? That is when I realized that it is the emotional connection or empathy I had for the patient led to my to actually talk to the patient rather than just let one of my supervisors know about that.
Let's move on to talks about Neymar's poor and overrated performance in both the UCL and La Liga. He has been under heavy criticism to being unable to fit in with Spanish football. However, after a lengthy interview we have figured out some inside information about his personal life. As quoted by the Brazilian, "The parents of a close friend of mine have died, and I have been visiting him and unable to focus on recent games. Hopefully I can bounce back against Celtic FC next week!" But what does he mean by that, is he personally affected by that death (traumatized) or is he been busy consoling his friend that his mind is just off the game. Well, considering his closeness with the friend, it is evident that Neymar has been showing great spurts of empathy towards his close friend and has therefore been unable to focus on the ever-important clashes for Barca. Neymar has himself said that he can understand what his friend is going through and that is a perfect explanation for how much of empathy he is showing and his inability to focus on his professional life. However, we all hope he is able to fight back in the next game that he will be playing; next week against Celtic FC.
In an interesting comparison of Empathy between both myself and Neymar, it is evident that both of us have shown great amounts of empathy in wide varieties of situations; be it for people we know or complete strangers. It is our ability to relate to a situation, whether we personally know the person or not. However, that is and cannot be given as an excuse for not being able to focus, as Empathy is a very good virtue that can be shown not only outside at a workplace but also at home and at school. Simply asking how somebody's feeling or asking them What's Wrong? can be a simple way of showing empathy for a person's feelings and behaviors. Many people do find it easier to show empathy towards family members as we do have a sort of biological bond with them; making it easier for us to understand their situation; similar to how Neymar was able to understand his friend's situation with the death of the parents. It is also very important for supervisors at workplaces to be able to show great amounts of empathy towards their employees, otherwise their employees will not trust them or show them a great amount of respect. If a supervisor shows empathy towards his fellow employees, next time the employees may feel more comfortable working in that type of environment as they would feel their feelings are being taken care of all the time. Anyways it is time for me to sign-off at Camp Nou, see you next time where I will talk to you after the New Year, where I will give you some more interesting news on how it feels to go back to the hospital after a 2 week break as well as some interesting transfer rumors in the world of football.
